Language Course Placement

Students who have no prior knowledge of Chinese will take Chinese 1100. Students who have studied Chinese at another university or college, will typically be placed according to the number of credits earned at the previous institution. For students whose credits would put them between classes at MU, and for students who earned Chinese credit in high school, a placement test will likely be necessary. Please see the Chinese Program Coordinator for more information.

Heritage Speakers

University policy does not allow native speakers to earn credit for introductory foreign language classes (i.e. Chinese 1100 and 1200). Heritage speakers who may have grown up in the U.S., speak Chinese at home, but cannot read and write, are also not permitted to take Chinese 1100 as it is a course reserved for beginners with no prior knowledge of both written and oral Chinese. Heritage speakers who are interested in furthering their ability to read and write Chinese should meet with the Chinese Program Coordinator to determine their options for learning Chinese at MU.
